Arteagricola: The Gentle Revolution of Ancient Grains in Puglia

There's a corner of Puglia, between the foothills of Gargano and the salt flats of Margherita di Savoia, where the land isn't just cultivated, but protected like a precious treasure. Here, Agricultural art, an artisanal farm that has made "protecting the future" not just a motto, but a daily mission. Theirs is a courageous story, a successful challenge against desertification and the challenges of a wounded land, guided by a deep love for their roots and an ethical vision of entrepreneurship.

A Tale of Courage and Vision

It all began in 2007, from a simple yet powerful idea shared by longtime friends: Massimo Borrelli, a law graduate with a love for the land passed down to him by his father, and Savino Del Vecchio, an expert environmental consultant, together with Gennaro and Laura Borrelli, and longtime farmer Matteo Conteduca, dared to imagine a different future for the Capitanata region, a land historically suited to grain cultivation but threatened by abandonment and industrialization.

Inspired by agroecological regeneration theories and guided by the belief that everyone can contribute to improving the environment they live in, they created Arteagricola. A daunting challenge, they began by purchasing an abandoned seeder and investing in land that was no longer considered productive. Today, that experiment has become a thriving 900-hectare farm, where their love for the land has improved the grain and restored hope to a community.

Guardians of Tradition and Ancient Grain

At the heart of Arteagricola's philosophy is a profound respect for biodiversity and ancient agricultural traditions. They cultivate "old-fashioned" grains, native seeds that adapt better to the soil and tell age-old stories: from the prized Senatore Cappelli durum wheat, “the wheat that made Italy”, from Solina soft wheat, to rye, barley, spelt and legumes.

The care of the land is meticulous and sustainable:

  • Sowing on firm soil: To avoid altering the properties of the soil and reduce emissions and processing.
  • Multi-Year Rotations: To give biodiversity to the soil and keep it naturally fertile.
  • Self-produced organic fertilizer: They replenish organic matter in the soil using organic fertilizer produced internally, closing a perfect circle of circular economy.

The Agricultural Pasta Factory: Where Tradition Becomes Flavor

To preserve the integrity and nutritional value of their precious wheat, Arteagricola built its own artisanal pasta factory in Manfredonia, processing exclusively its own raw materials. Here, pasta is a work of art created with passion and patience, without compromise:

  • Bronze Drawing: For a rough and porous pasta, capable of capturing and retaining every sauce.
  • Very Slow Drying: It occurs at temperatures below 32°C, for 24 to 72 hours. This slow process preserves the proteins, flavor, digestibility, and organoleptic qualities typical of durum wheat.

Their supply chain is 100% self-managed and transparent, "from field to table." They don't import a single grain: when their wheat runs out, their pasta runs out. A limited production of the highest quality, dedicated to those seeking authenticity in every bite.

An Energy and Social Revolution

Arteagricola is a unique example of total self-sufficiency in Italy. Not only do they produce and process raw materials, but they also meet their energy and heating needs thanks to a futuristic, zero-impact biogas plant. Fueled by agricultural byproducts, this plant produces clean energy and organic fertilizer that is returned to the land, closing the virtuous cycle.

But Arteagricola's revolution is also social. They believe in and invest in young people, collaborating with schools on work-study programs and creating local employment opportunities. What began as a bet between friends is now a growing family, a resource of skilled workers, and a shining example of ethical and resilient entrepreneurship.
