Cerqueto Organic Rosehip Extra Jam

There are fruits that no one grows and that everyone in the countryside knows: the red berries of the Rosehip, the wild rose of hedges, which matures in late summer and remains on the branches until the first frosts. Harvesting them is slow, cleaning them of seeds and internal hairs is even more so, and that is why a rosehip jam It's a small peasant luxury. Cerqueto, in Acquapendente, in Alta Tuscia, prepares it with the 60% fruit, well beyond the minimum required to be called “extra”, with only organic cane sugar, lemon juice and pectin.

The result is a red-orange jam, with a velvety consistency and an unmistakable flavour: bitter-sweet, with a tannic and fruity note reminiscent of apricot and medlar, an almost ripe tomato base, and a length that hints of tea. It's a jam for those looking for something different from the usual strawberries and apricots: perfect for breakfast, surprising with cheeses, and precious in pastries. All from organic farming, all produced in Italy.

The roots of this Rosehip Jam are deep in tradition

The name “canina” has a history that dates back to Pliny the Elder: the ancients believed that the root of this wild rose cured the bites of rabid dogs, and the name stuck to it for two thousand years, together with the Greek name of the fruit, rosehip, which literally means "dog rose." For centuries, farmers across Europe have used the berries as a pantry remedy against winter ailments, dried for herbal teas, cooked into jams and syrups, and as a prank for children: the fuzz of the seeds, tucked into their collars, is known as "grattaculo" in central Italian dialects.

His modern fame, however, was born from the war. In 1941With Britain cut off from citrus supplies, the British government discovered that rose hips contained twenty times the vitamin C of oranges and organized a national harvest: entire school classes were sent out to collect them, and hundreds of tons of berries became syrup distributed to children across the country. In the Tuscia countryside, where rose hips grow wild on the edges of fields and oak groves, that same wisdom has never been lost, and this jam is its heir.

Choosing Extra Rosehip Jam means taking care of yourself

Rosehip is one of the fruits richest in Vitamin C of the plant world, and even if cooking reduces some of it, a jam with 60% berries retains a significant portion, together with flavonoids, carotenoids (lycopene and beta-carotene, responsible for the red-orange color) and antioxidant tannins. This is why herbal teas and preparations based on rose hips have always been associated with supporting the immune system during the cold season.

Compared to many industrial jams, here it is sugar is cane sugar e organically grown productsThe fruit is the main ingredient, and there are no preservatives, colorings, or flavorings: 181 kcal per 100 g, with 43,2 g of sugars, largely due to the recipe and the fruit itself. Pectin, a natural gelling agent extracted from fruit, is a soluble fiber. Like any dessert, it should be enjoyed in measured doses, but a teaspoon of this jam brings to the table a slice of spontaneous biodiversity that few products can match.
