Ortrugo dei Colli Piacentini DOC Organic

Sparkling wine from a select production of Ortrugo, an ancient vine grown exclusively on the Piacenza hills

Green apple and lime blossoms in a glass of fresh sparkling wine: an aperitif that tastes of the Piacenza hills.

The Ortrugo of the Piacenza Hills DOC from Ronco delle Rose

This sparkling wine is made from a select batch of Ortrugo, an ancient native grape grown exclusively on the Piacenza hills, its only home in the world. In the glass, it offers fresh notes of green apple and lime blossom, with a sparkling liveliness that makes it perfect as an aperitif or with fish dishes. At the Ronco delle Rose winery in Carmiano di Vigolzone, all processes are carried out by hand, from pruning to harvesting. The grapes are processed entirely on-site until bottling, using grass cover crops and organic fertilizers, according to the ICEA-certified organic method since 2003. Serve chilled, at 6-8°C.

The roots of this Ortrugo are deep in tradition

The name itself tells its story: Ortrugo derives, according to tradition, from "l'altr'uga"—the other grape—because for centuries this white grape served as a supporting character in the Piacenza vineyards, blended with Malvasia wines to add acidity and freshness. It wasn't until the 1970s that some far-sighted winemakers decided to vinify it as a single varietal, discovering a sparkling white with such an unmistakable character that in 1984 it was included in the Colli Piacentini DOC as the flagship of the area. It is the revenge of the "other grape": a grape variety that exists nowhere else in the world and that today represents the very identity of the hills between the Tidone and Nure Valleys—the same ones where the Sacchi family has cultivated it for over a century.

Choosing Ortrugo dei Colli Piacentini means taking care of yourself

Choosing a certified organic wine means choosing vineyards cultivated without synthetic chemicals, where grassing and organic fertilizers nourish the soil and the health of the grapes. With 74 kcal and just 1,4 g of sugar per 100 ml, Ortrugo is a dry and light sparkling wine, perfect as an aperitif without weighing you down; the salt content comes exclusively from naturally occurring sodium. Consumed in moderation, a glass of chilled bubbles is one of the most convivial rituals of the Italian table: here, with the added guarantee of an entirely company-owned supply chain, from vineyard to bottle, overseen by four generations of the same family.

How to Best Use: Ortrugo dei Colli Piacentini DOC

  • HILLSIDE APERITIF: serve it at 6-8°C with a bowl of Organic Shelled Almonds lightly toasted and salted and some Organic Green Olive Bruschetta: the fine bubbles and notes of green apple whet the appetite as per the Piacenza tradition of “sharing a glass with friends”.
  • WITH NOBLE FISH: it is the ideal companion for a starter of Organic Irish Smoked Salmon on bread and butter or a Ventresca of Red Tuna with fresh onion: the sparkling liveliness degreases the richness of the fish and enhances its finesse.
  • ON FRAGRANT SEAFOOD FIRST COURSES: try it with spaghetti seasoned with Traditional Cetara Anchovy Colatura, garlic and parsley: the deep flavour of the colatura finds its perfect counterpoint in the fresh finish of Ortrugo lime blossoms.

The Producer: Ronco delle Rose

Davide Sacchi's Ronco delle Rose is the story of four generations of winemakers in Carmiano di Vigolzone: from great-grandfather Luigi, who in 1910 cultivated a few rented rows of vines, to grandfather Angelo, who in 1963 purchased the Casa Gatti land, later managed by his father Arturo, up to Davide who in 1999, after graduating as an agricultural expert and completing a sommelier course, converted the winery to organic methods—ICEA certified since 2003—from grape growing to winemaking, all strictly by hand and on the estate.
