Agricultural Company – Termini Imerese (PA), Sicily
Between Mount San Calogero and the Torto River, where mangoes ripen in the Sicilian sun: Carmine's vision, guarded by Laura
There's a corner of Sicily where mangoes hang from branches under the same sun that ripens lemons, and the air smells of fruit you'd expect thousands of miles away. It's the Oasi Tropicale Sicilia, in Termini Imerese, in the province of Palermo: a farm whose name reflects its exceptional nature. Because the tropics aren't everywhere in Sicily: they're the privilege of very few places, where sea, mountains, and winds create a unique microclimate. And this oasis, nestled between Mount San Calogero and the Torto River, is precisely one of those places.
This story has a name and a heart: Carmine Lima. For ten years, Carmine grew tropical fruits on his farm, adopting a bold and rare choice: growing mangoes in open fields, without the use of greenhouses or pesticides. Just soil, sun, and agricultural expertise. Carmine loved to share the almost capricious needs of his plant: mangoes cannot tolerate temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius, even at night; they require soil no more than two kilometers from the sea, no higher than 100 meters above sea level, sheltered from the strong Sirocco and Mistral winds. In Sicily, he explained, they can only be grown on the northern coast and in a small area in the east: a delicacy for the few, allowing you to enjoy a tropical fruit without traveling to other continents. Today, his oasis continues to flourish: his wife Laura has taken over, preserving his vision, tree after tree, harvest after harvest.

The difference between any mango and the Oasis mango lies in one word: RIPE. Imported mangoes are picked unripe to make the long journey across the oceans—and they remain unripe, until they rot, never truly becoming their true self. Sicilian mangoes, on the other hand, ripen on the tree and are harvested at the perfect time: this way, they retain all their nutritional and nutraceutical properties, and develop that intoxicating flavor and aroma that Carmine, with pioneering pride, simply described as HEAVENLY. Anyone who tastes them understands that this wasn't an exaggeration: it was a technical description.
Alongside mangoes, the Oasis cultivates Sicily's other great tropical fruit: avocado, in two varieties with complementary characteristics. The Hass avocado, the tastiest, with its buttery, intense flesh; and the Bacon avocado, the most delicate, gentle, and elegant. The philosophy here remains unchanged: open fields, no pesticides, harvested at the perfect stage of ripeness, and just a few kilometers between the tree and the table. A fruit that the Americas gave to the world and that the Palermo coast has adopted like a child.
Carmine was a passionate advocate for the virtues of his fruits, and the numbers proved him right. Avocado is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, like olive oil: healthy fats that counteract the oxidation of cholesterol, helping lower LDL cholesterol and raise good HDL cholesterol—the same property as oleic acid, found in olive oil, the cornerstone of the Mediterranean diet. It also contains the fat-soluble vitamins K and A, and is one of the few fruits to contain vitamin D. Ripe mangoes, for their part, arrive on the table with all their health benefits intact, as only a fruit picked at the right time can. Tropical, yes, but with a Mediterranean soul.

Today, Oasi Tropicale Sicilia is living proof that you can change the geography of taste without forcing nature: all you need to do is listen to it, find the right location, and have the patience of a pioneer. With Laura at the helm, Carmine's legacy is renewed with each season. At Al Passo Food, you can taste the tropics every kilometer, from the Termini Imerese coast to your table.
