Seitan has its roots in the Buddhist monasteries of East Asia.

Il seitan — whose name derives from Japanese and literally means “protein compound” — has very ancient origins in Zen Buddhist monasteries of 6th century AD China, where the monks, bound by the precept of the non-violence towards animals, developed this extraordinary vegetable protein as a substitute for meat in the daily diet. Known in China as “miàn jīn” (面筋, “wheat muscle”), spread rapidly in Japan, Vietnam and Korea, becoming one of the mainstays of Buddhist monastic vegetarian cuisine call shōjin ryori. In Nine hundred, seitan was brought to the West by the Japanese doctor George Ohsawa, founder of the macrobiotic philosophy, who celebrated its nutritional properties and culinary versatility. Today, it's one of the most beloved foods in Italy's new plant-based cuisine, with top-notch producers like Monastero producing it in an artisanal and organic way.

How to Best Use: Organic Seitan Strips

  • ORIENTAL STIR-FRY STYLE PAN-SAUTEED
The quickest and tastiest way to enjoy Seitan Strips is pan-frying: heat a drizzle of EVO oil in an iron pan or wok, add the Straccetti and sauté them over a high heat for 5 6-minute, until they produce the characteristic crunchy sound (“FRSS”). Add a handful of Fresh Organic Spinach e Mixed Colored Organic Peppers cut into julienne strips: in a few minutes you will get one vegan oriental stir-fry fragrant and protein-rich, to be served on a bed of brown rice or noodles.
  • BAKED AS A CRISPY SECOND COURSE
For a drier and less fatty version, bake the Straccetti at 200 ° C for 6 minutes on a baking tray lined with baking paper, possibly with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and a sprinkling of aromatic herbs. Serve them as second dish with a side dish of Organic New Potatoes roasted with rosemary and a handful of Rucola fresh raw. For a gourmet touch, complete with a sprinkling of Organic Hazelnut Grains toasted: the crunchiness of the hazelnut marries perfectly with the umami flavor of the seitan.
  • FILLING FOR SANDWICHES, PROTEIN SALADS AND SINGLE DISHES
Hot Seitan Strips are the ideal filling for gourmet vegan sandwiches: layer them in a toasted baguette with vegetable mayonnaise, salad leaves, Organic Salad Tomatoes sliced and some yellow pepper roasted. Alternatively, cooled and cut into pieces, they become the protein ingredient of buddha bowl e complete salads: combine them with Chickpea Hummus, Naturally Cooked Chickpeas, organic cucumber, avocado and Slow Food organic sesame tahini creamA unique lunch, complete from a protein point of view and in pure style plant based.
