Ancient red-violet variety, with sweet and fragrant pulp
A name that makes you smile, a flavor that brings back memories: the plum from the orchards of yesteryear.

The Coscia di Monaca plum is instantly recognizable: elongated and tapered, its intense reddish-purple skin veiled in bloom, that natural sheen that is the surest sign of a fruit picked at the right time and handled with care. The flesh is sweet, juicy, and fragrant, with a pleasant tangy note beneath the skin that keeps it from being cloying. It's an ancient variety, one of those found in country orchards and at village markets before large-scale plantations imposed a few standardized cultivars. Today, it's returning to our tables thanks to those who have chosen to continue cultivating it, for its flavor, not its yield.
The names of ancient fruits always tell a story, and this one more than any other. "Coscia di Monaca" (Monk's Leg) is a popular name common in central and southern Italy, born from the peasant imagination that saw the elongated shape and pale pink color of certain varieties as suggesting a leg hidden beneath a dress: an irreverent yet affectionate image, typical of a culture that gave fruits names of bodies and homes. It's no coincidence that the same name is found in various regions for varieties of peaches, pears, and plums. Behind the joke, however, lies a historical truth: it was indeed monasteries, with their enclosed gardens and orchards, that protected and selected European fruit varieties for centuries, passing them down from generation to generation when no one else cared.
Dark-skinned plums owe their color to anthocyanins, valuable antioxidants that combat oxidative stress, and are best known for their fiber content—particularly sorbitol and pectin—which makes them natural allies of intestinal regularity. They also contain vitamin C, vitamin K, potassium, and phenolic compounds, in a very low calorie profile: about 45 kcal per 100 g, making them a refreshing and light snack. Eating them with the skin on, after thorough washing, allows you to consume the highest amount of fiber and antioxidants.
If they're still firm when you receive them, let them ripen for a couple of days at room temperature, away from direct light: they're ready when they give slightly to the pressure of your fingers and their aroma becomes evident. Once ripe, store them in the refrigerator in the crisper and consume within 3-4 days. Wash them only shortly before eating: the waxy coating on the skin naturally protects them, so it's best not to remove it beforehand.
