Cocoa Butter of La Saponaria

La Saponaria's Organic Cocoa Butter is a 100% pure cosmetic raw material, entirely plant-based, obtained by mechanically pressing cocoa beans (Theobroma cacao) and deodorizing them using physical methods without the use of chemical solvents. It comes in convenient, easily dosed flakes, perfect for melting in a double boiler in homemade cosmetic preparations. It is a top-quality ingredient, rich in unsaponifiables—the noble fraction of vegetable fats—which give the butter its remarkable nourishing, emollient, and softening properties. It adds a subtle hint of cocoa to your cosmetics without altering their color, making it perfect even in formulations requiring a clear or transparent finish. Ideal for dry, mature, chapped skin, or skin particularly sensitive to the winter cold. This is the version you won't find in supermarkets: the pure ingredient for those seeking truly personal and conscious cosmetics.

The roots of this Cocoa Butter are deep in tradition

Cacao is the sacred plant of ancient Mesoamerican civilization: the Olmecs, as early as 1500 BC, were the first to cultivate the Theobroma cacao plant—whose scientific name literally means "food of the gods." The Maya and Aztecs used it for ritual and medicinal purposes: noble women of the Aztec Empire used cocoa butter as a beauty ointment to nourish their skin and protect it from the dry winds of the Mexican highlands. Cortés, returning from Mexico in 1528, brought cocoa to the court of Charles V of Spain, sparking the gastronomic and cosmetic revolution that would conquer Europe. In the 18th century, cocoa butter became a key ingredient in European pharmacopoeia: in the "ladies' recipe books" of the time, it was found in lip balms, nourishing balms, face creams, and even scented boudoir candles. Saponaria revives this age-old wisdom by offering the pure ingredient, without added emulsifiers or preservatives, for those who love to rediscover the ancestral pleasure of creating their own cosmetics at home.

Choosing Cocoa Butter means taking care of yourself

La Saponaria Organic Cocoa Butter is a true nutritional treasure for the skin. It contains an extraordinary concentration of unsaponifiables (up to 5%)—phytosterols, tocopherols (natural vitamin E), and squalene—which provide antioxidant and protective action on the skin barrier. It is rich in noble fatty acids: stearic acid (35%), oleic acid (35%), palmitic acid (25%), and linoleic acid, which together form a true occlusive barrier protecting against skin dehydration—particularly valuable during the colder months. It contains theobromine and theophylline, cocoa alkaloids with toning properties and mildly stimulating microcirculation. It is an excellent ally for those suffering from chapped skin (lips, elbows, knees, heels), for pregnant women as a stretch mark preventative, for mature skin seeking deep nourishment, and for relaxing body massages. The aromatic scent of cocoa is a natural olfactory therapy anti-stress.

How to Best Use: Organic Cocoa Butter

  • DIY Lip Balms and Nourishing Sticks — Cocoa Butter is the queen ingredient of homemade lip balms: melt 30g of cocoa butter flakes in a bain-marie with 10g of beeswax from our Beeswax Candles (previously scraped) and 10ml of extra virgin olive oil — we have the delicious Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil which lends itself perfectly. Add a few drops of Organic Lavender Essential Oil and pour into small sticks.
  • BODY BUTTERS AND CREAMS FOR MASSAGE AND DEEP NOURISHMENT — Make a nourishing body butter by melting 50g of cocoa butter with 30g of light vegetable oil in a bain-marie. Once cooled slightly, whisk until soft and silky, flavoring it with Organic Rosemary Essential Oil Toning. Excellent as an anti-stretch mark treatment during pregnancy, as a relaxing massage butter, and as a cream for cracked feet and heels.
  • ARTISAN SOAPS AND ADVANCED COSMETICS — For those who love cold-process saponification and DIY artisanal cosmetics, Cocoa Butter is one of the most noble ingredients: recommended percentage of use in soaps 10-50% (saponification index 0,137 NaOH/g oil). Added as a partial replacement for liquid oils in cold-process soaps, it provides hardness, a creamy lather, and unique softening properties. For those who don't like DIY chemistry, you can always choose our Soap with olive oil or the Lavender soap already ready.
