Organic Bern Pink Tomato Seeds Kokopelli seeds

These certified organic seeds allow you to grow one of Europe's most popular tomato varieties: Rose de Berne, an ancient cultivar native to Switzerland and highly renowned in France for its exceptional organoleptic qualities. This indeterminate variety produces round, deep pink fruits, weighing between 180 and 240 grams, with juicy, sweet, and aromatic flesh. These reproducible seeds ensure the possibility of saving the seeds of the harvested fruits for future plantings, thus preserving biodiversity and the grower's autonomy. Each packet contains 35 selected seeds, ready to grow vigorous and productive plants that will provide abundant harvests from June to October.

The roots of this tomato are deep in Swiss peasant tradition.

The Rose de Berne tomato is an ancient variety with roots in the Bern region of Switzerland, where it was traditionally grown in family gardens and passed down from generation to generation. This pink tomato represents a precious genetic heritage, selected over time by farmers for its sweet flavor and resistance to Alpine climates. Unlike modern hybrid varieties created for storage and transport, the Rose de Berne was preserved for its exceptional flavor and juicy texture, characteristics that make it perfect for fresh consumption. Its spread throughout France and the rest of Europe is a testament to the superior quality of this cultivar, now protected and distributed by Kokopelli, an association committed to safeguarding agricultural biodiversity and free-range seeds.

Choosing Organic Bern Pink Tomato Seeds means taking care of yourself.

Growing your own tomatoes from organic seeds means guaranteeing vegetables free from pesticides, herbicides, and synthetic chemical fertilizers, rich in vitamins, minerals, and natural antioxidants. Rose de Berne tomatoes are particularly rich in lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that fights free radicals and protects cardiovascular health. They provide vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, and dietary fiber, essential for daily well-being. Their juicy, sweet flesh makes them perfect for those seeking authentic flavor without excessive acidity. Using reproducible seeds also means actively contributing to the protection of agricultural biodiversity, opposing industrial standardization and preserving heirloom varieties with a unique and adaptable genetic heritage. A gesture of care for yourself, your family, and the environment.

Sowing Tips

  • Sowing period: February, March, April (undercover)
  • Method: Sow in pots or cells
  • Ideal temperature: 16-20 °C
  • Conditions: Under light shelter (greenhouse, veranda, tunnel)
  • Timing: Sow 5 weeks before transplanting into open ground
  • Procedure: Distribute 2-3 seeds per pot, cover lightly with fine soil, and keep moist but not overly moist. Once germination occurs, save only the most vigorous seedling.

Transplanting and Earthing Up

  • When to transplant: After the last frosts (from mid-May onwards, depending on the climate)
  • Planting distance: Minimum 50 cm between plants
  • Transplant technique: Replant the entire root ball in the ground, burying the stem up to the first true leaves. This encourages the development of adventitious roots along the stem, making the plant more robust and anchored.
  • Irrigation at transplant: Water abundantly when planting to encourage rooting.
  • Reinforcement: After 2-3 weeks from transplanting, pile up soil at the base of the stem to further strengthen the root system and improve the plant's stability.

Supports and Exhibition

  • Supports: Essential for indeterminate varieties like Rose de Berne. Use sturdy supports (bamboo canes, wooden stakes, metal spirals) at least 1,80-2 meters high. Tie the main stem as it grows, using soft ties.
  • Pruning: Regularly remove axillary shoots (female shoots) to focus energy on the fruit and improve aeration. In late summer, pinch the vegetative apex to encourage the ripening of already formed fruit.
  • Exposure: Full sun (minimum 6-8 hours of direct light per day)
  • Cultivation: In the open ground or in a greenhouse/tunnel. In cooler climates, prefer protected cultivation to ensure warmth and protection.
  • Plot: Any type, as long as it is well-drained, rich in organic matter and preheated. Enrich with mature compost o well-rotted manure before the transplant.
  • Irrigation: Water regularly and consistently, avoiding waterlogging. Water at the base, without wetting the leaves, preferably early in the morning or evening.

Harvest Period

  • When to harvest: From June to October, depending on the sowing period and climatic conditions
  • Aging: Harvest the fruits when they reach a uniform deep pink colour and give slightly to pressure.
  • Storage: Best consumed fresh. Store at room temperature for a few days, away from direct light.

In the kitchen

The Rosa di Berna tomato is a true gastronomic gem thanks to its juicy, sweet, and slightly acidic flesh. Perfect for fresh consumption, it enhances summer salads, simply dressed with extra virgin olive oil, fresh basil and salt. Ideal for preparing caprese with mozzarella di bufala, rustic bruschetta on Semi-wholemeal Country Bread, or to enrich cold summer pasta. Its meaty texture also makes it excellent for fresh sauces, gazpacho, and quick sauces. Try stuffing hollowed-out tomatoes with rice, tuna e Slowfood salted Salina capers for a complete and tasty summer dish.
