This late French variety is the ideal choice for those seeking carrots for a long shelf life, retaining their crunch and sweetness throughout the winter. Flakkee produces elongated, cylindrical, tapered roots with a characteristic deep orange color. They can reach 20-30 cm in length and weigh between 50 and 150 grams. Its firm, sweet, and aromatic flesh, with a crunchy texture and fine fiber, makes it perfect for both fresh consumption and processing. These reproducible organic seeds allow you to grow a reliable and generous variety year after year, particularly suited to deep, loose soil. The 4-gram packet contains a large number of seeds, enough for several staggered sowings throughout the season. Perfect for family gardens and for those seeking self-sufficiency in the production of high-quality root vegetables.

The roots of this carrot are deep in the European fruit and vegetable tradition.

Carrots (Daucus carota) are native to temperate regions of western Asia and Europe, where they were initially cultivated for their aromatic leaves and the medicinal properties of their roots. Orange varieties, such as the Flakkee, are the result of centuries of selection that began in the Netherlands in the 17th century, when Dutch horticulturists succeeded in capturing the characteristic orange color due to its high beta-carotene content. The name "Flakkee" comes from the Dutch region of Flakkee (now Goeree-Overflakkee), where these long, cylindrical carrots were traditionally grown for winter storage. In France, these varieties quickly spread, becoming a mainstay of home gardening, thanks to their hardiness, productivity, and ability to stay fresh for months if stored in dry sand or in a cool cellar.

Semina

Sow directly into the ground from April to July, in rows spaced 25 cm apart. Carrot seeds are very small; to facilitate even sowing, it's advisable to mix them with fine sand. Sowing in February and March can be done in tunnels or glass bell jars to accelerate production. To ensure fresh carrots year-round, stagger sowing every 2-3 weeks. Lightly cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil (max. 1 cm) and gently compact with the back of a rake to promote seed-soil contact and facilitate germination.

Thinning

When the seedlings emerge (germination in 10-20 days), thin them out for the first time, leaving 5 cm between each plant. When the seedlings reach about 10 cm in height, thin them out again, bringing the final spacing to 10 cm. This is crucial: overly crowded carrots develop small, misshapen roots. The removed seedlings can be eaten as baby carrots.

Reinforcement

While carrots don't require as much earthing as tomatoes, it's helpful to lightly cover the top of the root that emerges from the soil as it grows. This prevents the exposed root collar from turning green (which becomes bitter) and protects the root from carrot fly attack.

Exposure and Soil

It prefers sunny locations but tolerates partial shade, especially in very hot regions. The ideal soil is deep (at least 30-40 cm), loose, sandy, well-drained, and rich in well-rotted organic matter. Absolutely avoid compacted, clayey, or stony soils that cause forked, misshapen, or short roots. Ideal pH: 6-7. Do not fertilize with fresh manure, which causes branched roots: use mature compost or well-rotted manure, incorporated at least 2-3 months before planting.

Irrigation

Medium water requirements. In the first few weeks after sowing, water regularly but sparingly to promote uniform germination. In the month following sowing, increase watering by watering abundantly once a week to prevent the roots from "burrowing" (becoming hollow inside). Thereafter, keep the soil slightly moist but never saturated. Avoid alternating water stress (drought-overwatering), which causes root cracking.

Protection and Care

Protect young seedlings from slugs and snails, which are particularly voracious in the first few weeks. Use physical barriers, traps, or wood ash around the rows. Lightly mulch between the rows to retain moisture and reduce weeds.

Collection and Conservation

Harvest from July to December, approximately 120-150 days after planting. For late-ripening varieties like Flakkee, the main harvest takes place in autumn and winter. Carrots can be left in the ground all winter if the soil doesn't freeze, protected by a generous layer of straw or dry leaves. In case of severe frost, harvest before the first deep freeze and store in dry, sandy boxes in a cool cellar (2-5°C), where they will stay crisp for 4-6 months. Harvest by gently pulling out the root with a spade to avoid breakage.

In the Kitchen: The Queen of Roots

Flakkee carrots, with their natural sweetness and crunchy texture, are incredibly versatile in the kitchen:

Beta-carotene (a precursor to vitamin A) is fat-soluble: consuming carrots with a drizzle of oil improves the absorption of this precious antioxidant.

The Producer: Kokopelli seeds

Kokopelli is an international association committed to defending food biodiversity and promoting patent-free, reproducible organic seeds. For over twenty years, Kokopelli has protected and distributed thousands of heirloom varieties of vegetables, grains, flowers, and aromatic plants, protecting them from extinction and restoring seed sovereignty to farmers and horticulturalists. Each Kokopelli seed represents an act of cultural resistance and a bridge to the future of biodiversity.
