French melon

Called Charantais melon, has a slightly smaller and rounder size, more sugary than Netted melon

The Melone Francesino: a souvenir from Italy

Originally from Africa, the melon was already cultivated by the Egyptians five centuries before our era.

Smaller and less sweet than what we know today, it was eaten as a vegetable, often seasoned with pepper and vinegar.

It is to Charles VIII that we owe its introduction in France at the end of the fifteenth century. Returning from the wars in Italy, he brought back this vegetable discovered in Cantalupo, then owned by the popes.

Initially baptized "cantaloupe melon", it was then imported to Charente, from where it will surely take its name.

Charentais melons: fruit or vegetables?

Contrary to popular belief, it is indeed a vegetable.

Like squash or zucchini, it is part of the cucurbit family.

The most famous melon is the Charentais type. But don't be fooled by its name, the term “Charentais” does not mean that it is produced in Charente.

It denotes its physical characteristics: round with light green bark barred with dark green streaks and orange flesh. You can even find Charentais melons from Morocco, Spain or Senegal.

But it is better, of course, to wait for the full French season, which runs from June to September.

Production and types French melon

Produced in the open ground, it is harvested by hand in the coolest hours of the day.

It must be consumed as quickly as possible to ensure full flavor.

Some melons have obtained a PGI (Protected Geographical Indication), a guarantee of quality.

This is the case of the Alto Poitou melon, the Quercy melon and the Guadeloupe melon.

As for the one in Cavaillon, it could soon get the PGI, as growers and shippers are working side by side in this direction.

Charentais melon for my health?

Made up of over 90% water, melon is low in calories. Rich in vitamins C and B, potassium and trace elements, it is also appreciated for its high beta-carotene content.

This antioxidant protects the skin and has a "healthy glow" effect.

But don't be too greedy: the fibers it contains stimulate intestinal transit and have a mild laxative action.
