Reproducible Organic Seeds – American Old Variety
The legendary pink oxheart that has won over generations of horticulturists

This heirloom variety is one of the world's most famous and beloved tomato cultivars, cultivated by the Sudduth Hill family for over a hundred years before being popularized in 1980 by Ben Quisenberry. Brandywine Sudduth's Strain produces majestic, rounded, slightly flattened "beefsteak" fruits that can weigh up to 1 kg. The fleshy, silky-textured, and nearly seedless pulp releases an intense aroma and a perfectly balanced sweet-tart flavor, making this variety a legend among heirloom tomato enthusiasts. The indeterminate plants can grow to over 3 meters tall and feature characteristic, potato-like foliage that is abundant and resilient. These reproducible organic seeds allow this extraordinary variety, a symbol of horticultural biodiversity and American farming tradition, to be perpetuated year after year.
Sudduth's Brandywine Strain is a selection and development of the "Pink Brandywine" variety, potentially the original Brandywine strain introduced commercially by Johnson and Stokes in 1889. The Sudduth Hill family jealously guarded these seeds for over a century, passing them down from generation to generation as a precious treasure. In 1980, Doris Sudduth Hill donated the seeds to Ben Quisenberry, finally enabling the widespread distribution of this extraordinary cultivar. The name "Brandywine" likely derives from the eponymous river in Pennsylvania, the region where this variety originally established itself. Today, this tomato represents a symbol of horticultural biodiversity and cultural resistance to varietal standardization, bringing the authentic flavors of 19th-century horticulture to contemporary tables.
Sow in pots between February and April, in a sheltered, well-lit environment, maintaining a temperature between 16-20°C. Sow 5 weeks before transplanting. Use rich, well-drained organic soil. Keep the substrate moist but not saturated.
Transplant into open ground after the last frosts (late April-May), once the soil has warmed. Minimum spacing between plants: 50 cm. Bury the stem up to the first leaves to encourage the development of adventurous roots along the stem. This technique (earthing) strengthens the plant and improves water and nutrient absorption. Water thoroughly when transplanting.
It's essential to provide sturdy supports at least 2,5-3 meters high, given the vigorous indeterminate growth. Use wooden stakes, bamboo canes, or reinforced metal cages. Tie the branches regularly with natural raffia or soft ribbons, avoiding excessive tension. Pruning the axillary shoots (de-shooting) is recommended to focus energy on the main fruits.
Requires full sun (minimum 6-8 hours per day). Suitable for all soil types, provided they are well-drained, rich in organic matter, and warm. Ideal pH: 6-7. Add well-rotted compost or manure before transplanting. Medium watering requirements: water regularly at the base, avoiding wetting the foliage.
This variety is not suited to very hot regions or excessively cool seasons. It prefers temperate climates with warm but not scorching summers. The fruit is susceptible to cracking if overwatered after periods of drought.
From June to October, in staggered form. Harvest when the fruits have reached their characteristic deep pink color and yield slightly to pressure. For fresh consumption, harvest when fully ripe.
Brandywine Sudduth's Strain is considered one of the world's finest fresh-eating tomatoes. Its plump, sweet, and fragrant flesh, with a perfect balance of acidity and sugar, makes it ideal for:
Thanks to its dense pulp and thin skin, it is also perfect cooked: sauces for fresh pasta, baked stuffed tomatoes, or simply grilled with Origan and salt.
Kokopelli is an international association committed to defending food biodiversity and promoting patent-free, reproducible organic seeds. For over twenty years, Kokopelli has protected and distributed thousands of heirloom varieties of vegetables, grains, flowers, and aromatic plants, protecting them from extinction and restoring seed sovereignty to farmers and horticulturalists. Each Kokopelli seed represents an act of cultural resistance and a bridge to the future of biodiversity.
