Natural Hybrid Lime x Kumquat
The exotic citrus fruit that has found a home on the Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Limequat is an extraordinary and relatively rare citrus fruit born from the natural hybridization of the lime (Citrus aurantifolia) and the kumquat (Fortunella margarita), combining the best of both worlds in a small fruit with an explosive personality. Grown on the sunny terraces of the Amalfi Coast—an area par excellence for the production of superior-quality citrus fruits thanks to the mild Mediterranean microclimate, fertile calcareous soils, optimal exposure, and a millennia-old citrus-growing tradition—this limequat develops unique sensory characteristics that distinguish it both from its cousins grown in other regions and from common citrus fruits.
The fruit is small, elongated-oval, about the size of a large olive or walnut (about 3-5 cm long), with a thin, deep yellowish-green skin when ripe, a smooth or slightly wrinkled surface, and the distinctive characteristic inherited from the kumquat: the peel is sweet, aromatic, rich in fragrant essential oils, and completely edible without peeling. The internal pulp is juicy, tart-tart with a hint of lime, divided into a few small segments containing seeds (usually 2-6 per fruit), pale yellowish-green in color.
The taste experience of limequats is unique and surprising: bite into the whole fruit (after carefully washing it) and the first sensation is the aromatic sweetness of the peel, which explodes in the mouth, releasing fragrant essential oils (limonene, linalool, citral) with notes of lime, mandarin, orange blossom, and spices. Immediately following is the intense and refreshing acidity of the pulp, balancing and contrasting the sweetness, creating a complex and enveloping balance of sweet, bitter, and acidic notes. The finish is long, clean, and refreshing, with a lingering aroma that invites you to bite into another fruit. Some describe limequats as "the lime you can eat with the peel" or "the larger, more acidic kumquat," but in reality, it is a citrus fruit with its own identity that deserves to be known and appreciated for its unique qualities.
The limequat is a relatively modern hybrid created intentionally in the early decades of the 20th century (1910s–1920s) in the United States, likely in Florida or California, through the controlled crossing of Mexican lime (Citrus aurantifolia, variety Key lime) and kumquat (Fortunella margarita). The goal was to create a citrus fruit that combined the characteristic acidity and aroma of lime with the hardiness, cold tolerance, and, above all, the sweet, edible peel of kumquat, resulting in a versatile fruit suitable for both fresh consumption, culinary use, and ornamental cultivation.
Several limequat varieties were developed and stabilized, including the best-known 'Eustis,' 'Lakeland,' and 'Tavares.' Their introduction to Italy, and specifically to the Amalfi Coast—an area already renowned for its PGI "Limone Costa d'Amalfi" lemons and its long tradition of citrus cultivation on steep terraces overlooking the sea—likely occurred in the second half of the 20th century, when visionary citrus growers experimented with unusual species and varieties to diversify production and offer high-quality niche products. Amalfi's mild climate, with mild winters, warm but breezy summers, abundant sunshine, and natural protection from cold winds provided by the mountains behind, proved ideal for the limequat, which here expresses its full sensory potential.
The limequat, like all citrus fruits, especially those with edible peel, is extremely rich in vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in high concentrations in both the pulp and peel, providing powerful antioxidant, immunostimulant, and pro-collagen support. The peel is particularly valuable, containing flavonoids (hesperidin, naringin, quercetin, rutin) with anti-inflammatory, vasoprotective, and antioxidant properties; aromatic essential oils (dominantly limonene, with linalool, citral, alpha-pinene, beta-pinene), which, in addition to their intense aroma, possess antimicrobial, digestive, and calming properties recognized by herbal tradition and confirmed by modern studies; and pectin, a soluble fiber that supports intestinal health and contributes to the feeling of satiety.
Consuming the whole fruit with the peel maximizes the intake of these beneficial compounds, which are lost during peeling in other citrus varieties. It is naturally low in calories (about 50-60 kcal per 100g), free of saturated fat and cholesterol, and rich in water and fiber. Its intensely acidic flavor stimulates salivation and digestion, making it perfect as a natural aperitif or digestif after large meals. A citrus superfood that packs a punch of benefits into a compact package.
