Also known as mountain ash, it is a tree of the Rosaceae family, typical of the temperate climates of Europe and Asia.
The fruit itself is small, round or elongated, and usually red or orange when ripe. It has a sour taste, similar to that of cranberries or black cherries, which makes it excellent for jams, syrups and even alcoholic drinks.
The wood of the rowan tree is used for the production of furniture and handicrafts due to its hardness and resistance.
The rowan is also an important food for wildlife, such as the birds that love its ripe fruit and the insects that feed on its flowers.
Rowan fruit is also said to have health benefits due to its high content of antioxidants, vitamin C and other nutrients. It could help you have better digestion, strengthen your immune system and even prevent cancer in some cases.
Despite these benefits, rowan can be difficult to find in many parts of the world and is not as well known as other fruits. However, if you come across any, it's definitely worth a try!
Before eating it, it is important to subject it to a process maturation or cooking.
There are different ways to prepare it: some recommend putting it in the freezer and then waiting for it to soften before eating it fresh, others suggest boiling it with sugar to create a tasty jam.
Otherwise, let it ripen until the skin turns black, brownish. Only in this case will it be possible to taste the delicious pulp of this ancient fruit at its best.
