Maximilien Merone's story is interesting, and not just because it's set in the midst of a global pandemic. It's a powerful story because it reminds us that we don't have to be afraid to accept challenges, nor can we afford to stop believing in our dreams. This is why Max chose to tell us how he founded his business from scratch, with the aim of promoting conscious food consumption.
How was AlPassoFood.com born?
“My brother and I came up with the idea. Shortly before the lockdown began in March 2020, we set up the project.
It was not easy at all to find all the equipment and obtain the authorizations, but despite the quarantine we went ahead.
The institutions, not being very "digital", slowed us down a bit because we had to move to sign or even just ask for information. "
“No, on the contrary, I did something completely different before, ditto my brother.
We threw ourselves into this sector because we who live outside Rome have always bought from small local food producers.
You only go to the supermarket for household products. This is why we said to ourselves “why not propose it to other people as well?”.
We liked the idea of providing higher quality products at the same price as those in supermarkets. "
“We started by making home deliveries to friends, even if tomorrow we would also like to open a shop.
For now, our goal is to allow small local producers to make themselves known to people who otherwise would not even know they exist.
For deliveries to Rome we use our refrigerated truck, while for the rest of Italy we rely on DHL and UPS.
We ship both to people who want to bring quality to their homes, and to restaurants who have difficulty in obtaining food during this period. "
“Basically it's me and my brother. We rely on some lawyers and some accountants to follow the bureaucratic part a bit.
It was not easy to find them in this period especially for e-commerce.
While I took care of social media as a social media manager. "
“Usually it goes like this: we go incognito as customers to taste the products, we buy a bit of everything and try them, we also take them to friends, or we put them in the boxes for customers to taste them.
Then we collect the feedback and from there, if the product is truly exceptional, we propose a deal.
Young producers are always delighted to see their products reach so many people through the Internet, older ones not always.
We got to know many producers, especially from the south, through the form they can fill out on our website. "
“We have three types of boxes: one for fruit, one for fruit and vegetables, and one for vegetables, which can also be subscribed.
The price for a medium box ranges from € 12 to € 34 and they are pre-set boxes, with seasonal products that change every week.
We also have boxes for meat with products selected by us, for example there is the one for the barbecue.
Anyone who wants can create their own box, perhaps adding honey, pickles, or something else. "
“All our products are ecological and hypoallergenic. They come from a producer in Bolzano that we have recently met and they are excellent.
For personal care we have a completely natural propolis based product. A producer from Sacrofano, on the other hand, sends us a phenomenal product based on snail slime for skin care. These are things you hardly find around, that's the beauty of it. "
“We do our best, it is definitely a priority. We drive around in a methane car and the van is a hybrid.
Our packaging has no plastic and, Covid permitting, in the future we would also like to collect the cartons to waste even less.
In the choice of suppliers, we always "reward" those who produce organic and biodynamic.
Last week we went to Ventotene to find a biodynamic producer called Mattia Matrone, who is now testing a new way of producing, 100% natural. Now we sell its legumes.
We want to make people understand the value of consuming differently; many people don't know what organic and biodynamic means.
So let's try to explain it, and to understand the work behind it. The flavor is authentic and makes you feel the difference compared to the products you usually find in the supermarket. "
