Villasimius (CA) — Sardinia

The "after-lunch nap": a slow philosophy for natural wines 600 meters from the sea.

Meigamma: A Slow Life Philosophy

In the Sardinian language, "Meigamma" means "after-lunch nap." This word encapsulates an entire philosophy of slow living, the one that inspires Meigamma in the production of its wines, olive oil, and honey. Here, in Villasimius, vineyards, olive groves, gardens, and beehives coexist in a pristine and respected landscape, just 600 meters from the sea. Meigamma is a metaphor for the need for slowness, for a pace that accommodates nature when it comes to its fruits: an invitation to slow down, to listen to the earth, and to give it time to express its full potential. It is from this vision that authentic wines are born, made only with quality grapes, abundant sunshine, and the intense aromas of the Mediterranean herbs that surround the vineyards.

Barbara and Giuseppe, a story of passion and land

Meigamma is Barbara and Giuseppe Pusceddu, winemakers in Villasimius, in southeastern Sardinia. Theirs is a rich and varied story, just like their wines: she is Russian, he is Sardinian, they met and discovered they shared the same passion for the land and wine. In 2006, they decided to follow this dream and planted their first vineyard, a typical Cannonau, immersing themselves in the fascinating world of viticulture and winemaking. From that first planting, the desire to create an authentic wine was born, capable of expressing the terroir in the glass. Barbara, in particular, is the soul that transforms dreams into desires and desires into reality: next to the vineyard where almond and olive trees already grew, she planted lavender and created a vegetable garden, creating a small Mediterranean paradise.

Five hectares of dunes, sand, and wind just steps from the sea

The Meigamma vineyards extend over five hectares of dunes and sandy soils, 600 meters from the sea: a place buffeted by winds, sprayed by salt, and supported, when necessary, by emergency irrigation. It's a land rich in granite and challenging to manage, where the naturally sandy soil gives the wines an unmistakable Mediterranean flavor. Here, agriculture is profoundly respectful: no systemic treatments or synthetic chemicals are used, only copper and sulfur, allowing the land to express its potential. The landscape is fully integrated with the surrounding fauna and flora: shrubs of medicinal herbs, along with granite boulders, border the Cannonau and Muristellu vines, while hares, wild boars, and deer enjoy the buds on the young vines.

Native vines: a heritage of biodiversity

Meigamma works exclusively with native grape varieties from its area, custodians of extraordinary biodiversity: Nuragus, Nasco, Moscato, Malvasia, Vermentino, Bovale, Cannonau, Muristellu, and others. Each variety has its own history and character: Nuragus, for example, is a grape brought to Sardinia by the Phoenicians, which grows here alongside asphodel and chamomile; the Nasco vines, a native aromatic variety, are slender and short but well-rooted; the almond trees grow close to the Carignano. The choice of these grape varieties reflects a deep connection to tradition and the land. Each plant coexists with the spontaneous Mediterranean vegetation, in a natural balance where the vine is part of a living and thriving ecosystem. The next planting will be dedicated to Vernaccia, right next to the mastic tree.

Natural wines, from the vineyard to the cellar

The same logic that inspires Barbara and Giuseppe in the vineyard also applies in the cellar. All grapes are harvested strictly by hand. Fermentation occurs spontaneously, using only indigenous yeasts, without the aid of selected yeasts. The wines are neither clarified nor filtered, and contain no added sulfites until bottling. It's a radical choice of non-intervention: nothing that could alter, hide, or modify the characteristics of the fruit. The result is a pure, artisanal wine, conveying all the flavors of the Mediterranean and its terroir, without constraints. An authentic product, which Barbara and Giuseppe prefer not to constrain with labels like "natural" or "biodynamic": simply, the sincere fruit of a respected land and passionate work.

The wild garden and the vermouths of medicinal herbs

A veritable wild garden extends around the vineyards, rich in medicinal herbs and Mediterranean essences that Barbara collects and transforms. From the medicinal plant mastic, along with corn poppy, gentian, licorice, and mugwort—everything this spontaneous garden offers—excellent artisanal vermouths are made, one white and one red. This is yet another expression of a philosophy that sees biodiversity as a treasure to be treasured, and the land as an inexhaustible source of aromas and flavors. In every Meigamma product—from wines to olive oil, from honey to vermouths—we find the same imprint: respect for nature, a passion for the Sardinian land, and that philosophy of slowness encapsulated in the name, which invites you to savor everything slowly, at the authentic rhythm of nature.
