On the label it is specified lentil from Alta Tuscia
Lentil variety of Onano
Small, Round and Tasty

The Onano lentil is grown within the Municipality of the same name and in a very small neighboring area.
Onano has always had the pride of producing highly appreciated legumes both for their flavor and for their ease of cooking.
This cultivation boasts a very ancient tradition: evidence of it is already found in the "Orders, statutes, municipal laws of the community and people of Onano" of 1561. Giulio Andreotti, a frequent visitor to Onano in the 50s, in his volume "
Papa Mastai's charade ”reports an anecdote about Pius IX and the Onanese lentil. In fact, on the eve of 1871, following the loss of temporal power, the Pope consoled himself with the fact that the following day he would have at his table a tasty dish of Onanesi lentils, a gift from Cardinal Prospero Caterini. This is what PIO IX could compare the lost power to, says Andreotti, to a plate of lentils.
Numerous awards were paid to this product at various international exhibitions: Rome and Buenos Aires in 1910, London in 1911 and finally Paris, again in 1911, on the occasion of the 3rd INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION OF MODERN PROGRESS.
In those years, the lentil was known and marketed in many countries thanks to the promotional action carried out by some local companies specialized in the preparation, cleaning and packaging of the product.
For this product, the Mountain Community has recently provided for the registration of the relevant trademark (Typical products of AltaTuscia) at the Viterbo Chamber of Commerce and the procedure for European recognition is underway.
The prized legume, cooked in the "antique Etruscan manner" is served during the Lentil Festival which takes place every year in Onano in the week of August XNUMXth.

An area with uncontaminated landscapes, with jealously guarded ancient traditions, capable of making you immerse yourself in the fairy-tale atmospheres of its villages, rich in history and legends.
With the typical products that recall the flavors of the past, we suddenly find ourselves projected into a journey through time, far from the typical frenzy of mass tourism.
With its medieval villages, with numerous archaeological sites, with attention to food and wine organic and quality, with a naturalistic vocation and landscape conservation, with festivals and folkloristic events, it is certainly an area to discover.
