Salicornia, of the botanical genus Glasswort o samphire (synonym) and species europaea,
is an edible herbaceous succulent plant belonging to the Amaranthaceae botanical family.
The primary characteristic of glasswort is its affinity to salty soils, from which it takes its name.
Morphologically it is typically branched but apparently leafless and fleshy or succulent.
Glasswort is also known as sea fennel, sea bean and sea asparagus.
