Magic Bus Organic Zinnia Seeds Kokopelli seeds

This extraordinary zinnia variety was born from a cross between the "Baggett's" and "Zowie" cultivars, producing single, semi-double, and double flowers in warm, vibrant hues ranging from orange to red, including magenta. Zinnia Magic Bus is an annual plant with generous and long-lasting blooms, perfect for creating splashes of color in gardens, mixed borders, and decorative vases. The flowers, in addition to their ornamental beauty, are edible and can decorate salads and summer dishes. This zinnia is also a valuable honey plant that attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, contributing to the garden's biodiversity. Its dyeing properties allow natural pigments to be extracted from the petals, while in herbal tradition, some zinnia species are used for their medicinal properties. Reproducible organic seeds ensure the possibility of preserving and propagating this wonderful variety year after year.

The roots of this Zinnia are in the Americas

The Zinnia genus, belonging to the Asteraceae family, is native to Mexico and Central America, where it grew wild in prairies and along forest edges. The name "Zinnia" was given by the Swedish botanist Carl von Linné in honor of the German physician and botanist Johann Gottfried Zinn, who first scientifically described these plants in the 18th century. The Zinnia elegans species was introduced to Europe in the late 1700s and quickly became popular in ornamental gardens due to its ease of cultivation, heat tolerance, and the variety of colors of its flowers. In Mexican tradition, zinnias were considered sacred flowers and were used in religious ceremonies. Today, this plant represents a symbol of joy, resilience, and generosity, bringing the vibrant colors of its native lands to contemporary gardens.

Semina

Protected sowing (March-May): Sow in pots in a protected environment at a minimum temperature of 18°C. Use light, well-drained organic soil. Distribute the seeds evenly, cover lightly with soil, gently press down, and keep moist until germination (7-14 days). Place in a bright location but out of direct sunlight.

Direct sowing in open ground (April-June): Possible when the soil has warmed up well (soil temperature above 15°C). Prepare the soil by tilling it, sow by broadcast or in spaced rows, cover lightly, and water gently. Thin the seedlings when they reach 5-8 cm in height.

Transplant

Transplant into open ground when the seedlings have developed at least 4-6 true leaves and nighttime temperatures have stabilized above 10°C (generally May-June). Planting distance: 20 cm for compact borders, 50 cm for larger, solitary plants. Do not bury the root collar. Water thoroughly after transplanting.

Supports

The Zinnia Magic Bus, with its modest height of 50 cm and relatively sturdy stems, generally doesn't require support. If exposed to strong winds or in very fertile soil where growth is particularly vigorous, small, discreet supports or support netting can be used to prevent the stems from bending under the weight of the flowers.

Exposure and Soil

Exposure: Full sun (at least 6 hours a day). The more sun it receives, the more abundant the flowers will be.

Plot: It adapts to all soil types as long as they are well-drained, rich in organic matter, and well-heated. Ideal pH: 6-7. Improve with well-rotted compost before planting. Avoid waterlogging, which promotes root rot.

Irrigation: Medium water requirements. Water regularly during growth and flowering, especially during dry periods. Preferably water at the base, avoiding wetting the leaves and flowers to prevent fungal diseases (powdery mildew). Gradually reduce watering towards the end of the season.

Cultivation Care

  • Regularly remove faded flowers (deadheading) to prolong flowering until autumn
  • Fertilize every 2-3 weeks with liquid organic fertilizer during flowering
  • Check for the presence of aphids and snails, which are particularly harmful to young seedlings.
  • Mulch the base with straw or bark to retain moisture and reduce weeds.

Flower Picking

July to October. For bouquets: cut the stems early in the morning when the flowers are fully open but not yet mature. Immediately immerse in water. Vase life: 7-12 days. For edible use: pick fresh petals as soon as they open.
