Wild Strawberries

Fresh Berries from Sonnino, Lazio

The wild scent of the Lazio undergrowth in every small red fruit

Wild Strawberries: Authenticity and Artisanal Flavor

These wild strawberries come from the farms and woodlands of Sonnino, a municipality in the Agro Pontino region in the heart of Lazio, where the hilly microclimate and volcanic soil create ideal conditions for growing these small red treasures. Unlike large cultivated strawberries, wild strawberries (Fragaria vesca) are small, intensely fragrant, and have a much more concentrated and aromatic sweet-tart flavor. Each punnet contains exquisitely delicate fruit, hand-picked at the perfect point of ripeness, when the intense red color and penetrating aroma demonstrate the peak of their flavor. Their soft yet firm texture, lack of internal cavities, and flavor reminiscent of wild honey mixed with tart notes make them irresistible both eaten raw and in desserts. Freshness is guaranteed by the extremely short supply chain that brings these fruits from the garden to the table in just a few hours.

The roots of these strawberries are deep in the woodland tradition

Wild strawberries are wild fruits that have grown spontaneously in European undergrowth since prehistoric times. The Romans already prized them, and Virgil extolled their virtues in his Bucolics, recommending shepherds to gather them in the meadows. In the Middle Ages, wild strawberries were considered magical fruits associated with fairies and forest spirits, and were used both as a food and as a herbal remedy for their astringent and purifying properties. The Sonnino area, with its oak, chestnut, and holm oak forests, represents an ideal habitat for these perennials, which carpet the undergrowth with their stolons. Here, the tradition of picking wild strawberries is intertwined with that of wild herbs and mushrooms, forming part of the rural cultural heritage of Lazio. Today, some varieties are also grown in small specialized plots, yet they retain the wild character and intense flavor of their woodland ancestors.

Choosing Wild Strawberries means taking care of yourself

Wild strawberries are packed with nutritional benefits despite their small size. Rich in vitamin C (even higher than oranges), they support the immune system and have powerful antioxidant properties. They contain anthocyanins, flavonoids, and ellagic acid, substances that fight free radicals, protect cells from aging, and have demonstrated cardiovascular and anti-inflammatory effects. They provide minerals such as potassium, magnesium, iron, and manganese, essential for electrolyte balance and bone health. Wild strawberries are rich in dietary fiber, which aids digestion and intestinal regularity. They contain natural salicylic acid, with anti-inflammatory properties similar to aspirin. Despite their sweet flavor, they have a low glycemic index, making them suitable even for those who monitor blood sugar levels. With only 30-35 kcal per 100g, they are perfect for low-calorie diets without sacrificing taste and pleasure.
