The Origins of the Second Bean

This legume has always accompanied the diet of the populations residing on the northern side of Lake Bolsena, in particular those of the municipality of San Lorenzo Nuovo, for which it was the main source of vegetable protein.

The volcanic origin of the soils has made it possible to obtain a quality product, with particular characteristics of ease of cooking (“cooking beans”) and favorable organoleptic properties (sweet flavour). The fruit was consumed essentially dry. Only the attachment of some farmers to the ancient traditions has allowed the preservation of this legume.

Rare product

There are two causes that have limited cultivation.

The introduction of the combine harvester has postponed the time of harvesting the wheat, thus delaying the useful times for the sowing of the legume.

Furthermore, the massive use of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers has increased the nitrogen endowment of the soils. Both causes do not allow the normal maturation of the plant in the summer period.

Today, thanks to companies like AlPassoFood rediscovering typical, so-called "niche" food products, is offering a new opportunity to small agricultural producers, who, overcoming the aforementioned difficulties, are trying to relaunch it and implement it today with ancient cultivation techniques.

On this product that has only recently been added to the basket of typical products of the area, the Mountain Community, in collaboration with the Municipal Administration of S. Lorenzo Nuovo, is undertaking all those support actions so as to be able to quickly get to interesting productions.

Every year, in the week of August, this particular legume can be appreciated in the stands of the Gnocchi Festival in S. Lorenzo Nuovo.
