Lakatan Banana and Sabrosa Strawberry Jam: Authenticity and Artisanal Flavor

There are pairings that seem daring and yet turn out to be perfect: this jam is one of them. The Lakatan banana is a cultivar native to the Philippines that has adapted perfectly to the climate of Sibari, Calabria, where it finds mild temperatures and abundant sunshine. It is sweeter and more aromatic than supermarket bananas, with a dense pulp that becomes creamy and velvety when cooked. The Sabrosa strawberry provides the perfect counterbalance—an intense aroma and a tart note that cuts the sweetness and adds freshness. The result is a balanced jam, with 80g of fruit per 100g of product and a list of just three ingredients: fruit, fruit, and sugar. Nothing else.

The roots of this jam lie in tropical Calabria

That a Philippine banana is growing and bearing fruit in the Sibari plain is news worth sharing. In recent years, Southern Italy has become a testing ground for tropical fruit growing: mangoes, avocados, papayas, lychees, and indeed bananas have found compatible climatic conditions in Calabria and Sicily, partly thanks to favorable microclimates and partly due to warming average temperatures. This isn't just an agronomic curiosity, but a concrete answer to a real problem—the growing difficulty of some traditional crops—and a way to shorten supply chains that currently start on the other side of the world. Transforming a banana grown a few hundred kilometers away into jam, rather than importing an unripe, transit-ripened harvest, changes everything: the flavor even more than the environmental impact.

Choosing this jam means taking care of yourself

The most telling figure is the fruit content: 80 g per 100 g of product, a high percentage that means only one thing—that the sugars on the label come largely from the fruit itself, not just from additives. Three ingredients in total, with no added pectins, preservatives, colorings, or flavorings: the consistency comes from cooking and the dense banana pulp. Strawberries provide vitamin C and anthocyanins, bananas provide potassium and magnesium, and the fiber remains at 1,9 g per 100 g. It remains a jam, therefore a sweet food to be used sparingly, but with the substantial difference of being made from real fruit.

Best Uses: Lakatan Banana and Sabrosa Strawberry Jam

  • IN A BREAKFAST THAT MAKES YOU GOOD: spread it on your Biscuits Panfetta of Ancient Grains Organic or on a slice of Rye bread in a loaf pan Toasted with butter: the tropical-tart profile pairs perfectly with whole grains.
  • WITH YOGURT, RICOTTA AND FRESH CHEESES: a spoonful in the Organic Farm White Yogurt transforms the snack; try it also on Organic Buffalo Ricotta with a sprinkling of Organic Hazelnut Grains, for a spoon dessert in thirty seconds.
  • IN BAKED DESSERTS AND FILLINGS: perfect for tarts, filled biscuits, and rolls, or for filling sponge cakes and pancakes; its creamy consistency also makes it ideal paired with melted white chocolate, which enhances its tropical notes.

Food container

Store the closed jar in a cool, dry place, away from light. After opening, refrigerate and consume within a few days, always scooping with a clean, dry teaspoon. Since it contains no preservatives, the jam should be treated with the same care as a homemade jam. It's normal for the color and consistency to vary slightly from batch to batch, as fruit is never identical.
