The Calebasse for Maté by Les Jardins de Gaïa

This calabash—or "mate pot"—is the essential traditional utensil for enjoying maté in the South American style. Adorned with an elegant metal rim that protects the mouth, it has a capacity of approximately 200 ml (this varies from specimen to specimen, as it is a natural object). Over the course of the many successive infusions you can make with the same leaves, you will discover the evolution of the aromas: the primary bitterness gradually gives way to sweeter, mellower flavors, while you fully enjoy the many benefits of this stimulating and vitamin-rich plant. An authentic, living object that patinas and improves with use.

The roots of this Calebasse for Maté are found in one of the oldest plants in humanity.

The calabash is made from the dried and hollowed-out fruit of the Lagenaria, the bottle gourd: one of the very first plants cultivated by man, used for millennia as a container on every continent. It was the Guarani people of South America who chose it as the ideal vessel for yerba mate: according to legend, it was a gift from the gods to give strength and companionship to mankind. The porous and living calabash participates in the tasting itself: it absorbs the aromatic oils of the maté and, infusion after infusion, year after year, enriches the drink with character. For this reason, every calabash requires the "curado," the initiation ritual with hot water that prepares it for its long life of service—and for this reason, in Argentina and Uruguay, a well-seasoned calabash is neither lent nor replaced: it is passed down.

Choosing Calebasse for Maté means taking care of yourself

Drinking maté in a calabash isn't a folkloristic quirk, but the correct way to extract its virtues: the natural material maintains the ideal water temperature and allows for repeated infusions that gradually release matéine, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, for sustained, jitter-free energy. It's an entirely natural and biodegradable object, the antithesis of disposable plastic: with the simple care described below, it will last for years. And the ritual itself—filling, pouring, waiting, sharing—is a daily exercise in slowness and presence, a small barrier to the frenzy.

How to Best Use: Calebasse for Mate

  • THE CURADO, FIRST-USE RITUAL: Before using your calabash for the first time, pour hot (not boiling) water into it, let it sit for 20 minutes, then gently scrape the inside with a teaspoon to remove any natural residue. The calabash is now ready to welcome you. organic green maté and his inseparable companion, the Mate straw (bombilla) in stainless steel.
  • A SOUTH AMERICAN STYLE SNACK: in the Río de la Plata the afternoon maté is always accompanied by something sweet: pass the calabash around the group along with squares of Organic 62% dark chocolate with cashews and hazelnuts.
  • A CALEBASSE FOR ALL SEASONS: the container is also suitable for other robust infusions to be tasted in small sips: try the Calebasse in the cold months Organic evening herbal tea or Organic Jasmine Green Tea, with a toasted profile that pairs well with the woody note of the pumpkin.
